As an exchange student at a local high school, you’ll get to experience this contrast firsthand, alongside forests, lakes, and coastline that make up some of the most striking natural scenery in Europe. Sweden’s Viking history runs deep too. You won’t spot any Vikings walking the streets, but their legacy still shows up in museums, runestones, and even the odd local legend.

Classic Program

If you are looking for a cultural experience for 2-3 months, or an Academic Semester or Year, our Classic program will match you with a welcoming host family and place you in a nearby school. We find the host family and choose the school, and you can enjoy what they have to offer while immersing yourself in local culture.

Classic high school exchange program

Age and eligibility

To be eligible for an exchange to Sweden you must be aged 15.5 to 17 years of age.

Language criteria

An online course is recommended prior to departure.

Program length

Sweden offers short 2 & 3 Month programs, and longer Academic Semester & Year programs.

Visa

Residence permit must be applied for in person at the Swedish Embassy in Canberra for Academic Semester & Academic Year programs. It can be a lengthy process.

Short program students travel as a tourist.

Schools

Students attend a local public high school, and all lessons are taught in Swedish.

Swedish high schools offer 18 national programs. Our students will be placed in either academic/preparatory or vocational programs. Each school offers a limited number of 18 the national programs. The local school will determine which national program the student will be enrolled in, whether academic/preparatory or vocational.

Clubs and extracurricular activities are not common in Swedish schools, so most social activities take place outside the school environment.

Welcome Camp (AU $1,295)

Kick off your Nordic exchange with an optional orientation camp in Stockholm. You’ll join students heading to Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, making friends before your exchange even begins.

Settle in after the long flight, explore the city, and get a first taste of life in Scandinavia.

The camp includes practical workshops to help you feel confident about living with a host family, starting at a new school and navigating cultural differences. This a chance to arrive feeling prepared, connected and ready for the program ahead.
